BACKGROUND
Georgia Tech (GT) has developed a number of overseas programs around the globe. These programs provide students with the opportunity to complete a portion of their academic programs in top-notch foreign universities that are partnered with GT. As a result of immersion in a foreign academic and cultural environment, students have the maximum opportunity to learn to operate effectively in an atmosphere that is wholly different from that of GT and the U.S.
LOCATION INFORMATION
Canada
Canada is a country occupying most of northern North America, extending from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west and northward into the Arctic Ocean. It is the world's second largest country by total area, and shares land borders with the United States to the south and northwest.
A federation comprising ten provinces and three territories, Canada is a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. It is a bilingual and multicultural country, with both English and French as official languages at the federal level. Technologically advanced and industrialized, Canada maintains a diversified economy that is heavily reliant upon its abundant natural resources and upon trade, particularly with the United States, with which Canada has had a long and complex relationship. It is a member of the G8, NATO, Commonwealth of Nations, and La Francophonie.
Québec
Québec City offers a North American experience with a European twist. Founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain, Québec city is known as the cradle of French civilization in North America. With its architecture, pedestrian streets and fortifications, unique in North America, Québec City is an unparalleled historical and cultural heritage area that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
Québec City is the second biggest economic centre in the Province of Québec and the seventh biggest in Canada. It offers an exceptional quality of life with its cultural events, international festivals and activities, access to wide open green spaces, and a network of bike paths. Just a few minutes drive from downtown core, outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the many possibilities: from biking to white-water rafting, from golfing to simply enjoying the region's breathtaking natural beauty. Finally, Québec city, with its population of nearly 700, 000, is one of North America's safest cities, least expensive and most visited cities.

CREDIT TRANSFER INFORMATION
Credit for courses taken as part of exchange programs is received by transferring the credits back to Georgia Tech. Since it's important for you to know what kind of credit you'll get as soon as possible, you'll be able to have courses pre-approved to transfer. With a Foreign Credit Approval Form (available from OIE) in hand, you'll take course descriptions to the appropriate academic unit here at GT to request approval. For example, if you are taking Math classes, then you'll go to the School of Mathematics here at GT and ask if the courses can be transferred to GT. The School of Mathematics will sign the form showing how the courses will transfer so that you'll know up front what kind of credit you can expect to receive.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Québec City is one of the country's leading cultural centers, with a busy year-round schedule of activities that includes plays, symphony concerts, shows of all kinds, a winter carnival, and a summer music festival.
The Office of Student Life is mandated to promote student activities on campus. Some of the most popular campus activities at the University include theater, social groups, music, variety, comedy, improvisation, dance, creative writing, visual arts, and cinema/video. In addition to the community initiatives, some 12 permanent student groups also serve the university population.
Le PEPS and the Sports Activity Office give students access to five gymnasiums, a large covered stadium, a climbing wall, a fitness center, an Olympic-size swimming pool, soccer fields, basketball and tennis courts, a driving range, sports medicine and physiotherapy clinics, as well as courses for all levels in more than 20 different sporting disciplines.
CLIMATE
Québec City has a humid continental climate characterized by cold and snowy winters, warm and rather humid summers, and ample precipitation throughout the year. Quebec City is one of the snowiest cities in Canada (the mean annual snowfall is 384 cm) and is almost guaranteed a white Christmas. The prolonged winter season and ample snowfall led to the idea of establishing the Quebec Winter Carnival. The transitional seasons, spring and autumn, are rather short, although autumn produces spectacular foliage colors. The summer is the sunniest, and paradoxically, the wettest time of year.

Can I go abroad while pursuing a GT degree?
GT students have many opportunities to participate in semester/exchange and study abroad programs. In an exchange program, you actually take classes with the host university's students and faculty. (In some cases, this means that you must have excellent knowledge of the local language to participate). Exchange program participants usually pay normal GT tuition and fees for each term abroad. Credits can be pre-approved to transfer back to GT so that you do not get behind in your studies. The application deadline for fall and academic year programs is in early February; for spring programs the deadline is in September/October.
In a study abroad program, the courses are taught by GT faculty and you register for regular GT courses. Residents pay normal matriculation fees, but do not pay ancillary fees (athletic, health, etc.). Non-residents only pay resident matriculation plus $250 ($1500 for GTL Summer/$2000 for GTL Spring/Fall) . This is a savings of over $6,000 for out-of-state students who participate in GT study abroad programs as full-time students! Deadlines for summer study abroad programs vary from early January to mid-February.
In most cases, if you are eligible for financial aid or scholarships, you can apply your grants, scholarships, and/or loans toward the expenses associated with participating in all GT programs.
GT's International Plan: More than just study abroad
Your major is participating in this new initiative!
The International Plan is an intensive, degree-long program designed to prepare GT graduates professionally and personally for successful lives in the 21st century. Requirements of the program include international coursework, two terms abroad (any combination of study, research or internship abroad), proficiency in a second language, and a culminating course. Students who complete the program will have a designation on their diploma indicating completion of the degree with global competence: for example, "BS in Mechanical Engineering: International Plan." For more information or an application, contact your major advisor or OIE and visit the website: click here
