BACKGROUND
Georgia Tech (GT) has developed a number of overseas programs around the globe. These programs provide students with the opportunity to complete a portion of their academic programs in top-notch foreign universities that are partnered with GT. As a result of immersion in a foreign academic and cultural environment, students have the maximum opportunity to learn to operate effectively in an atmosphere that is wholly different from that of GT and the U.S.
LOCATION INFORMATION
The Netherlands
The Netherlands is the European part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which is formed by the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. The Netherlands is a constitutional monarchy, located in northwestern Europe. It borders the North Sea to the north and west, Belgium to the south, and Germany to the east. The current borders were formed in 1839.
The Netherlands is often referred to by the name Holland. This is, however, ambiguous as Holland is the name of a region in the western Netherlands. For more on this and other naming issues see below under 'naming conventions'.
The Netherlands is one of the most densely populated and geographically low-lying countries in the world (its name literally means "low country") and is popularly known for its windmills, wooden shoes, dykes, tulips, bicycles and social tolerance. Its liberal policies receive international attention, such as those concerning drugs, prostitution and euthanasia. The country is host to the International Court of Justice.

HOST INSTITUTION ACADEMIC INFORMATION
There have been many changes since the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) was established in 1956 as a Technische Hogeschool (Technical College). The university now has 9 departments and provides 11 Bachelor's degree programs, 1 special Bachelor's program, 20 Master's degree programs, 6 special Master's programs, 4 educational Master's programs (mathematics, physics, chemistry and computer science), 8 post-doctoral programs for technological designers (Professional Doctorate in Engineering, PDEng) and various post-doctoral courses and programs (Doctor of Philosophy, PhD).
In 2007 the TU/e has around 3000 employees, 240 professors, 7100 students, 190 PDEng students, 640 PhD students, 25,000 graduate engineers, 1200 graduate technological designers and 2300 PhDs. There are some 100 students' associations (social, sports, cultural and study-related) and 15 associations for graduates.
The TU/e has established a partnership with the Delft University of Technology and the University of Twente in the form of a Federation of Universities of Technology in the Netherlands which is at present being established. These three universities of technology are an important knowledge partner for industry and government in the field of advanced technology. They have an excellent scientific starting point among the top 20 European universities - with TU/e holding the number three position - and have a strong focus on the development and commercial application of knowledge. This partnership will be intensified in the coming years, and will initially promote the flow of students between the three universities from the bachelor's to the Master's programs. Together they will form the 3TU Graduate School in the field of Master's programs, the Institute of Science and Technology in the field of research, and the 3TU Innovation Lab in the field of commercialization of knowledge.
The TU/e is the commissioner of ten research schools recognized by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, as well as two of the six top research schools in the Netherlands and one of the four top technological institutes. The TU/e forms part of the European CESAER, Santander and CLUSTER university networks, and has partnerships with universities around the world.

CREDIT TRANSFER INFORMATION
Credit for courses taken as part of GT exchange programs is added as transfer credit on the GT transcript. Since it is important to know which kind of credit students will earn abroad as soon as possible, GT requires that courses be pre-approved for transfer. With a Foreign Credit Approval Form (available from OIE) in hand, and the credit transfer system information (listed below), students should submit course descriptions to the appropriate academic unit to request their approval. If taking Math classes, for example, then the student should go to the GT School of Mathematics to get permission for the courses to transfer to GT. If approved, the GT School of Mathematics signs the Foreign Credit Approval Form showing how the courses will transfer so that students will know which type of credit they should expect to receive.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Study Associations
Apart from becoming a member of a TU/e student association, it is also possible to join a study association. The associations reflect the interests of the course they represent. The following are examples of the kinds of activities organized by the study associations: study trips, lectures, excursions, parties, drinks, sport events, book sales and sales of old examination papers, etc.
Culture
Throughout the year there is a variety of performances, exhibitions and concerts to be seen in Eindhoven at the Parktheater (city theatre), Plaza Futura (alternative cinema), het Muziekcentrum (the music center) and the Van Abbemuseum (Van Abbe Museum). TU/e also has much to offer in the area of culture. The various clubs within Scala and Studium Generale are examples of this.
Scala: www.studentencultuur.nl
A variety of clubs and associations have established themselves with the cultural student center Scala. For example:
- a club for classical music (Quadrivium);
- a Big Band (Studentproof);
- a dance club (Footloose);
- a stage club (Doppio);
- a film and photography club (Dekate Mousa);
- role play group (Knights of the Kitchen Table);
- a pop music club (Modern).
Scala is situated in "de Bunker." Within the clubs and associations it is not just culture that is important. The clubs are a great way to meet people, to go to a concert with a group, or to join in a music, dance or film evening.
Studium Generale (SG) organizes lectures, readings, interviews, exhibitions, concerts, and theater, literature and film events. The SG program confronts you with technological, scientific, social and political matters. In addition, you come into contact with various forms of culture. There is a wide variety of workshops and excursions for people with all kinds of interests. Studium Generale also organizes cultural events for a wider public and so contributes to the cultural function of the university in the city and region.
Many activities are organized in cooperation with individual students and employees of TU/e or with study associations. Program information can be found in the folder Sgrift, on the notice boards and screens in the TU/e buildings, or you can be kept informed personally by e-mail.
International associations
TU/e encourages students to find work experience placements or to follow part of their study period abroad. Various associations on the TU/e campus such as AEGEE, BEST, ISN, IEEE, ASU and ESTIEM, give you the opportunity to prepare for a possible foreign adventure by making contact with international organizations and students.
CLIMATE
The Netherlands has a fairly temperate climate, very similar to England; temperatures are variable and rain occurs throughout the year. Summer temperatures range from 50ºF to 72ºF (June through September) and winter temperatures range from 30ºF to 35ºF (November through February). Don't forget, the tulips bloom in May.

Can I go abroad while pursuing a GT degree?
GT students have many opportunities to participate in semester/exchange and study abroad programs. In a semester program, you actually take classes with the host universitys students and faculty. (In some cases, this means that you must have excellent knowledge of the local language to participate). Semester program participants usually pay normal GT tuition and fees for each term abroad. Credits can be pre-approved to transfer back to GT so that you do not get behind in your studies. The application deadline for fall and academic year programs is in early February; for spring programs the deadline is in September/October.
In a study abroad program, the courses are taught by GT faculty and you register for regular GT courses. Residents pay normal matriculation fees, but do not pay ancillary fees (athletic, health, etc.). Non-residents only pay resident matriculation plus $250 ($1500 for GTL Summer/$2000 for GTL Spring/Fall) . This is a savings of over $6,000 for out-of-state students who participate in GT study abroad programs as full-time students! Deadlines for summer study abroad programs vary from early January to mid-February.
In most cases, if you are eligible for financial aid or scholarships, you can apply your grants, scholarships, and/or loans toward the expenses associated with participating in all GT programs.
GTs International Plan: More than just study abroad
Your major is participating in this new initiative!
The International Plan is an intensive, degree-long program designed to prepare GT graduates professionally and personally for successful lives in the 21st century. Requirements of the program include international coursework, two terms abroad (any combination of study, research or internship abroad), proficiency in a second language, and a culminating course. Students who complete the program will have a designation on their diploma indicating completion of the degree with global competence: for example, BS in Mechanical Engineering: International Plan. For more information or an application, contact your major advisor or OIE and visit the website: click here
