What is the Links Program?
Links Program assists the Office of International Education with welcoming new international students to our campus and community. It is a volunteer program that offers global connections for students to learn from one another, develop leadership, and discover various on-campus resources. New International students are matched with US students participating in the International Plan program at Georgia Tech. Students are matched based on academic discipline, language group, or country of origin/country where studying abroad.
What is a mentor?
- Assists a new international student to adjust to life at Ga Tech (see suggested activities).
- Answers any questions that the new student has about the university and community.
- Contacts mentee throughout the semester.
- Meets with mentee in September.
- Communicates with the program coordinator about how things are going at least twice a semester.
Who are the mentors?
US students participating in the International Plan Program. These students have been at Ga Tech for at least 2 semesters.
Who else can participate?
International students who are new to Ga Tech campus and community in Fall 2009.
What does Links involve?
- Attend one initial meeting in September 2009
- Genuine interest in learning about other cultures and assisting international peers
- Availability throughout the semester to meet and support the international peer
- Attend at least two cultural events and one civic event
- Attend one evaluation meeting at the end of the semester in December 2009.
Suggested Activities:
- International film
- Visit to the museum
- Visit to the State Capitol
- Show around campus
- Show around local community
- Meet for lunch or coffee
- Visit grocery stores
- Visit the university bookstore
- Visit the university libraries
- Visit a bank and show how to use the lobby service and the ATM
- Visit the post office
- Invite the mentee to your home
- Attend university sports events
- Go to a play, concert, or movie
If you wish to participate, please return the completed form as soon as possible so that we may link you with an international student. You may complete a Links application form online. If you wish to wait until you arrive on campus, applications will be available at OIE, Savant Building Suite 211.
Please return completed applications to OIE front desk by 4:30pm on the application deadline.
